ABCs Method of Son-Rise Program

I attended a free parent’s workshop for Autism organized by Embrace Autism. The event first started with testimonials from other parents, some also being the keynote speakers during the workshop. It was then related to a method that said to be effective on helping people with autism.

The ‘Son-Rise Program’ was then being introduced. Sharing lots of successful cases and how it was being started. However, many ABA professionals would be doubt on the method used by the program, in which go in reverse of that an ABA therapist usually do. Some parents even told that they have let go the OT, ST and ABA as they find these were not able to help their child effectively.

Towards the end of the talk, the ABC approach of Son-Rise Program was being shared and parents were encouraged to try at home. The ABC approach was basically stand for

A-     Assess

Observe the child and take note on whether the action of the child indicate ‘red’ light or green ‘light’. The speaker stated that all the stimming and ‘ism’ was perceived as ‘red’ light, to indicate that the person is not ready for communication

A keynote to be made as according to the speaker, stimming is acceptable and is seen to be something good. It means the person is trying to adjust him/herself to be comfortable and ready to adapt the world and he/she living in. Unlike ABA where stimming is often being rectified by the therapist.

B-     Born as Acceptance

The second approach and also action taken by the parents, is the join to connect. Parents were encouraged to join the activities that the child is performing, whether is stimming or the child is performing an ‘ism’. The speaker stated that that is the connection approach to enter to the child’s world and the person will be using the same bridge to get out of the world. In a nutshell, the speaker told us that parents to find way enter into the child’s world in order to bring him/her out. It is to be done with love and acceptance.

C-     Celebrate

In the workshop, many testimonials were shared on how powerful of such an approach to improve eye contact and to stay connected. The ultimate approach of the approach is to obtain ‘green light’ in which refer to the eye contact, physical as well as verbal contact. These response indicate that the person is ready to interact.

At the very moment, the speaker told the parents should then CELEBRATE in order to encourage more ‘green light’. The consistency of celebration of all attempts would encourage the person to do more.

The very initial action that shared by the speaker to encourage parents to try out after the workshop. The speaker also reminded parents to perform it with three Es in which refers to energy, excitement and enthusiast.
