Therapy for Special Kids

Once Noah was reported on Autism Spectrum Disorder, he was recommended to attend therapy. From there I notice that the limited resources available and also cost that incurred can put stress on parents.

I joined a discussion group that gathered parents with special kids. From there I discover popular approaches that been adopted, and said able to improve the situation.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy is the most common approach that used to improve ASD condition. It is target to improve the gross motor and fine motor skill in which to help one to be able to take care of oneself.
Program available from government funded institute but the waiting list is long. It is usually been conduct on monthly basic.
Private program is available to charge from average RM140 to RM150 per session, usually weekly basic.

Speech Therapy
The program is target to those with language delay and non-verbal individual. The target of improvement include identification, communication and interaction.
The fees is usually more expensive than OT and normally charge at RM180 per session.

ABA
I have not let my son try this. I heard this is more focus on improving one behavior. It guides one to behave nicely and give appropriate response.
I read about the powerful of ABA that able to transform a person completely. Some said it is the most powerful tool to 'cure' ASD.
I also read some debate on the above, that the approach is too harsh for a kid and more emphasis on teaching one to mask himself from ASD.

Music Therapy
It is very similar like those above but it use music as the medium to achieve the target. The charges similar with OT charges

EIP Program
A comprehensive program which consist of the above therapy to form a learning environment. Many enroll the kid for EIP program instead of nursery and kindergarten. The fees is high ranging from RM1,600 to RM5,500 depends group size, number of hour per day and number of day per week. The fees exclude of registration fees, review fees and material fees. Choice of  one to one and group session (2-6 person a group) are made available. Normally one to one session consists of 3 hours and longer duration applies on group session, which is normally 5 hours. Many centers also provide options on 2-5 days a week.

HBOT
HBOT is less popular for ASD compare to the above.I do not have much information on this. It is a medical approach if not mistaken with the use of oxygen that claimed able to repair damage on brain. The patient will be put into a medical machine with oxygen. One need to be undergo the procedure until the course is completed. I am not too sure on how long it would take, if I not mistaken it is about 40 days long. The fees is not cheap too.
